Our Families

The Gordonstoun family

Gordonstoun families are part of a global community who share the hope, belief and understanding of Kurt Hahn’s educational vision, uniquely delivered at Gordonstoun.

We are always keen to see you, at parent seminars, dinners, concerts, performances or the Summer open day. But we know this might not always be convenient, so we also welcome pre-arranged visits at any time.

Your first point of reference is the Prep or Senior School Parent Handbook, available via the iSams Parent App. To help, we have provided some of the most frequently requested documents below. Remember, your child’s House Parent will be able to assist you with anything more personal or individual.

Diversity

Gordonstoun Founder, Kurt Hahn, determined that Gordonstoun should be a diverse school. The principle was informed by the Seventh Law of Salem:

Free the sons of the wealthy and powerful from the enervating sense of privilege

He explained this as follows:

“Decadence is not always an inexorable decree of nature, more often it is a wilful waste of splendid heritage. The “poor” rich girls and boys wholly thrown into each other's company are not given a chance of growing into men and women who can overcome. Let them share the experiences of an enthralling school life with sons and daughters of those who have to struggle for their existence. No school can build up a tradition of self discipline and vigorous but joyous endeavour, unless at least 30% of the children come from homes where life is not only simple but even hard.”

Today, a carefully considered international, social and economic balance is maintained to remain true to his vision. For example, over a third of Gordonstoun students receive fee assistance.

Also, in a school where almost 35% of our community identify as neurodiverse, we continuously adapt the way in which we work, to empower all our students and staff.

Military & FCDO

At Gordonstoun, we understand that service needs come first. So we know how challenging it can be for MOD families, particularly when it comes to disruption caused by changes in location and different national and international curriculums.

Kurt Hahn, our founder, believed in education centred around service to others. Today, services are part of the Gordonstoun education, including the Fire Service, Coastguards, Conservation, and Community Service. Dedication to service is one of the many ways in which our school is unique, and a reason why many military families choose Gordonstoun.

Recently commended as sector-leading by inspectors, our pastoral team are uniquely equipped to help your child navigate the unique challenges children of military and FCDO families face.

If you’d like a Gordonstoun education for your child - but you don’t think you can afford it – be reassured. Full boarding starts from less than £6000 per year (age dependent) for families in receipt of the MOD’s CEA. Our all-inclusive curriculum means it’s incredible value too.

For families not eligible for CEA, we offer a 15% discount to all full time, regular members of the UK Armed Forces and FCDO families, means tested and service specific bursaries. For local families, Gordonstoun is a registered WAC provider for those eligible offering flexibility for our families.
