Services at Gordonstoun

Gordonstoun students commit their time and energy to both local and global communities.

Every senior student joins one of nine community and rescue services - taking on conservation or sports coaching roles or responding to genuine emergencies as part of the local Coastguard or on-site Fire Service.

They also travel across the globe for projects in Kenya, Romania and Thailand.

Fire Service

Gordonstoun is the only school in the UK to have its own Fire Service. Students and staff crew the school’s fire engine, responding to emergencies as part of the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service. The service was established by students in 1942 to help put out fires during the Second World War and has continued ever since.

First Aid

Students provide First Aid within the school at sporting fixtures and events, as well as working alongside the British Red Cross to provide First Aid provision at local events and galas.

Coastguard Rescue Team

The Coastguards are our oldest service - established soon after we were founded. King Charles III is a Gordonstoun Coastguards alumnus. Our team trains with the Aberdeen Coastguard to provide Search and Rescue capability along the Moray Coast and are the only Coastguard Cadet Force in the UK to attend real call-outs.

Conservation

The Conservation Service aims to improve the local environment, responding to requests from agencies like the Forestry Commision and Findhorn Foundation. Members keep bees, conduct wildlife surveys, work on the school's organic garden and maintain wildlife conservation areas. Every year they make juice from the apples in our orchard and sell it for charity.

Technical Support

The Tech Support Service provides tech support for Chapel, school presentations, drama productions and community events.

Community Action

Our Community Service works with groups in the Elgin area to support a wide range of activities, including Moray Riding for the Disabled, Cycling Without Age, and ENABLE, as well as local care homes, youth groups, and primary schools.

Outdoor Leadership

Members of Outdoor Leadership learn to lead activities such as canoeing, climbing, orienteering, hillwalking and mountaineering. Working with local schools and the wider community, they develop personal leadership skills and help maintain the environment.

Pool Lifeguards

The Pool Lifeguards Service undertakes professional training to provide cover at school swimming galas as well as when local community and charities make use of our facilities. The qualifications gained are recognised worldwide and enable students to serve at school and leisure centres across the UK.

Sports Service

Members of Sports Service work in partnership with Active Schools and Moray Council to offer coaching for local primary schools. Students gain confidence and skills whilst providing a direct service to the community.
